I was so lucky to be a Cinematographer on the documentary about Iris Apfel, who has now left this earth after 102 spectacular years. IRIS is the penultimate Maysles film and really worth a watch, it’s a heartfelt portrait of a true icon. She was hilarious, energetic, and always haggling for a deal - I’m so glad I got to know her.
I’ll never forget filming Iris browsing the dollar shirt bin at the Ft Lauderdale swap meet, or her micromanaging my filming of her Holiday train set, or the giant ostrich statue in her apartment and when you lift up the wing there’s a bar inside.
That was also an A+ crew of some of the finest people in documentary film.
